The two women who were seen in a distressing viral video from Manipur have approached the Supreme Court. The women have filed a petition in the Supreme Court. They sought SIT probe led by an independent IG rank police officer and transfer of trials outside the state.

The two women have also requested that their identities be protected. Their names are marked as X and Y in the petition. A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud will hear their plea today. The bench comprises CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra.

The women have further expressed their lack of trust on the Manipur Police, and they have further requested security for themselves. The two women want their statements to be recorded under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code by the nearest magistrate.

The Supreme Court has asked the Manipur government to details of numbers of FIRs on sexual assault against women during the ethnic riots. However, the central government has already issued a CBI probe into the May 4 incident. The center has seeked transfer of trials outside the state of Manipur with directives to complete the trials within six months.

The horrific incident from Manipur came into light on July 14, after the video was shared by the Scroll Media, which shook the nation. The video was from May 4 when clashes between two ethnic groups broke out, where a large number of men made two women paraded naked.

The petition by two women also requested the Supreme Court to take suo-motu action in the case and order a fair and impartial inquiry.

The Supreme Court last week condemned the deeply disturbing video. Further, the Chief Justice DY Chandrachud called on the government to take steps to protect women in the region of Manipur and to keep the court informed of their progress in the matter.

The Supreme Court was to hear petitions related to Manipur’s ethnic violence on July 28th, but it was postponed after the CJI fell ill
